Powerful, Deep, and Emotional Songs: Why Would I Want to Listen to Pitiful Music?
Music is 1 of the many things that causes us to experience complex emotions and, while happiness is a worthwhile endeavour, there is validity, purpose, and meaning in our sadness. Sure, I like to tap my toes to a happy tune as much as the next person, merely tapping into the deep stuff tin also be an extremely worthwhile and cathartic attempt.
There is much meaning that can exist derived from melancholy. In fact, sad music does not but evoke sadness. Researchers have discovered that, sometimes, listening to sad music actually makes us feel happier, more than romantic, less doomed, and supports our emotional well-beingness. Another study found that listeners felt less gloomy and miserable and more cheery, animated, and inclined to dance when they listened to sad music.
So, in order to help with this uplifting/melancholic process, I have nerveless songs (listed here in no particular order) that have "pitiful" written all over them. Whenever I hear these songs, I'g reminded nearly sure large and important aspects of the human status. While they are non always happy, they band true.

Just there are two songs that really makes me deplorable and I even don't know exactly why. They are not just emotional and melancholic, merely in that location are besides kind of "haunting". At to the lowest degree to me.
Audrey Lavergne - Central Park (It's from a movie)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvh2tpJt_bU
and this one:
Dahlia - Ghost Chair
https://www.youtube.com/scout?v=W6R27oSZCac
I tin can't even describe how this makes me experience. I retrieve it's very beautiful & melancholic.

Howdy Aaron Chapman, thank you lot for the song suggestions! I don't think that I accept heard songs from Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, and Chett Baker just you draw their work and music in such a way that it sounds similar they are very unique and evocative, especially if yous find them to have the well-nigh introspective and sincere songs. I volition exist checking those out and adding songs when I update the hub. :-) Accept a wonderful twenty-four hours!
AaronChapman on February 12, 2016:
I feel like you need to add together some Nick Drake and Elliott Smith songs. They have the nigh introspective and sincere songs, having a certain sophistication that no modern artist tin can imitate. There'due south also this element of mysticism in Nick Drake's songs that transcend you lot into this completely vulnerable and observant frame of mind. Nick Drake and Elliot Smith were the only ii artists that I feel could explain my depression without pitying the state of affairs. Chett Baker is another creative person that shouldn't be overlooked.

Hullo Bob Smith 0114, give thanks you for the song suggestions! I will have to explore Frank Sinatra'south No One Cares album and "Not That Funny" by Fleetwood Mac equally I exercise non recall I am familiar with them. It sounds similar both have different things to offer when information technology comes to exploring emotions of sadness and working through uncertain times/feelings, and I think it's neat how that song was able to put all of your concerns into their proper perspective. I will be checking those out and adding songs when I update the hub. :-)
Bob Smith from Plymouth, MI on Feb eleven, 2016:
I'd recommend Frank Sinatra's entire No 1 Cares album. It starts off with the title track and ends with "None Only the Lonely Center." In between, it explores all of the emotions of sadness in what turns out to be a very comforting style.
"Not That Funny," past Fleetwood Mac would be another expert song for this list. I remember laying on my bed at college, trying to figure out what comes next, listening to the Tusk album, and that song started playing. In some strange way, it put all of my concerns into their proper perspective.

Lovely list of songs , some familiar others not. Will bank check them out over grade of fourth dimension
Nalini Marquez (author) on July 05, 2015:
It'due south interesting because music does very often chronicle to both our age and preference. Near of the lists I've made take some songs that are older just a lot of the songs are newer or are relatively contempo. "Candle in the Wind" is a pitiful ane, and I tin can see why information technology was both an ode to Marilyn Monroe and why information technology was reworked to laurels Princess Diana. They both had tragic lives and in some aspects, the tragedies of their lives were similar. Actors oft say that they have to call up of something actually sad and awful for some of their lamentable scenes, so it's fitting that listening to sad songs would put you in the right mindset to write a sad or heartbreaking chapter in your next volume since writers connect so much with words and to words, and the music helps to add some other layer. I hope some of these songs are able to aid you lot with that and I hope that all goes well with the writing.
DW Davis from Eastern NC on July 04, 2015:
I may be showing my historic period and preference just I simply recognized 5 of the songs on your list. One of them, 'Candle in the Air current,' was a favorite of mine earlier Sir Elton reworked it to honor the fallen Princess Diana. Originally the song was an ode to Marilyn Monroe. Virtually sad music in full general, I heed to pitiful songs when I am trying to put myself in the right mindset to write a sad or heartbreaking affiliate in my side by side book.

Hi Jonas Rodrigo, y'all are welcome for the list and I am glad you are looking forward to listening to the songs and that yous've found some that you like! Cheers for the song suggestions as well. I am on the contend nearly "Riptide." Sometimes I hear it and there is something melancholy, a longing, a reaching, and it has a mixing of emotions (similar in a way to "Sweet Disposition") and other times it'south not melancholy plenty and information technology's not as melancholy equally the other songs on this list. Information technology was a recent improver to the list merely I've been debating it since I put it here. I'll swap it out with "Chasing Cars" until I decide since that 1 is very much a sad song. I hope you savor listening to the list! :-)
Jonas Rodrigo on July 02, 2015:
I love Fix You! I honey anything by Coldplay, actually. How To Salve A Life is nice too. Riptide being included somewhat shocked me; I don't think I've e'er considered information technology as a sad song. If I could add a song to this, I'd choose Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars. Ed Sheeran'due south Sunburn or Autumn Leaves is also skilful. Give thanks you for this list. I can't wait to hear them!

1)Here is "KNOWING ME" the sadness of long altitude dear and living with the retentivity of having had such special times together that may never happen over again. "Information technology was late, time ran out, and I had to leave the hard mode..."
http://youtu.exist/6_YnjzXjqc4?list=PLGy60lPWH9S8y-o4...
ii) Hither is WATERCOLOR LAKE: helping a best friend through a very melancholy divorce..."as your life falls apart we walk around the lake...and as each footstep tells the truth, the light through the leaves reveals every concluding mistake..." http://youtu.be/Sffor_JGWHQ?listing=PLGy60lPWH9S8y-o4...
three)Hither is TORNADO: Another very tragic song near someone in the midst of throwing their life abroad....but just maybe maybe they can relieve and see beauty in their pain....very poignant. http://youtu.be/IDi2cTWBgBM?list=PLGy60lPWH9S8y-o4...

I also enjoy listening to deplorable music. I experience that in that location is someone that as well feel the way I experience at the moment. Or sometimes I don't feel sorry, but I call back sadness is such a strong feeling that makes you create awesome things.
I concur that some of those songs doesn't come up to my mind when I think near sadness really, but I approximate that it depends on the person.
So I wanna add a vocal that comes to my mind that I utilize to listen when I'm sad, possibly you guys also bask it:
When I feel that I'm alone and everybody failed to me I heed to Everybody Hurts by R.Due east.G
Such a beautiful song that makes me feel more than sad but I kind of enjoy that, haha.

Nalini Marquez (author) on Dec 16, 2014:
I added Whitney Houston to this song list after I had created the poll and we can't make make modifications to the polls without erasing the previous votes and then I have not added Whitney or the other songs that were added after the poll started collecting votes. I was thinking of calculation another poll for the songs that were added after the poll just every time a song is added to the Hub it would be the same thing.
"I Will Always Dearest You" is very sad to me too. I become chills when I listen to it. There is definitely a connexion between music and what we associate it with that gives it power, or more power if it already has it. There was such tragedy to Whitney's life. Whitney gave that song so much power and emotion, and that song reflects both her career loftier (her amazing and moving voice) and her life depression (her funeral), which is sorry.
Elton John's rendition of "A Candle in the Wind" for Princess Diana is some other sad one. It does sound like you experience the emotion/connectedness with funeral songs merely since they are meant to bear upon united states that is probably a good connectedness with the music and the person that is no longer here. Thank you for the song proposition. I volition add it to the list :-).
TL Stahling from Usa on December 14, 2014:
I didn't come across Whitney Houston on your poll. I Will Ever Love Yous is very sad to me. Non only the song, only the tragedy of Whitney. Also, during her funeral equally her coffin was being carried out, they started playing that song and I cried for her.
Likewise, Elton John'due south rendition of A Candle In The Wind for Princess Diana made me cry. I guess there'due south a pattern of funerals with songs that affect me.

Hello JTRyder, I am glad that y'all dear the listing, specially since some of the artists may not accept initially seemed like a fit! You are definitely non the only one! :-) "Fix Y'all" is such a profound and heartbreaking vocal that really taps into then much. I don't follow So Y'all Think You Tin Trip the light fantastic but the piece that y'all sent to me was really moving! The story behind the choreography and music was meaningful and how it all came together was poignant and well done. Music is a linguistic communication, trip the light fantastic is a language, and music + dance is some other language and I enjoy seeing/watching/listening/interpreting them. Thank you for sending me the link.
I had never heard "Forever & E'er" before but I just checked it out. What a sorry dear song! I will add together it to this hub.
As a dancer, yous will have had your share of "feeling" the music and relating it to your work. And equally you mentioned information technology can change anything and everything. We are such sensory beings. Information technology is neat how humans can connect on so many levels and on different levels (including dance and music). Thank you for your annotate and I am glad y'all liked the list! :-)

I'thousand and then glad I'k non the only ane who appreciates distressing music sometimes! This is such a comprehensive listing across and so many different genres. Hello there EnyaBrennan61, thanks for your comment and feedback! I am glad that yous like the list! Enya would be a perfect addition to this list; I don't know how I missed her. I just listened to "On My Mode Domicile" and it is a nice song! I did not add it to the list because I thought it was a trivial chip more upbeat than the other songs in the list and "The Memory of Copse" didn't have words which is why I didn't add information technology. But because of your suggestion I did add together an Enya song and I volition go on your vocal suggestions in heed for future song lists that I make!
I think it is great how music is able to speak to us, move us, and aid u.s.a. procedure/become through life/recall/reflect/etc., such as in the way that y'all mentioned. I hope that the good moments and good feelings outweigh the melancholic and sorry moments, and that music continues to make you feel good when faced with the melancholic and lamentable moments.
Information technology was lovely to read your comment and thanks again for writing and sharing! Regards from U.South.A.! :-)
EnyaBrennan61 on October 27, 2013:
I like very much your list!! I agree that music is one of the many ways that nosotros process and become through life. I mind to my favourite vocalist Enya everyday, because her voice makes me feel so expert. The melodies of her songs and the haunting sound of her lovely voice makes my life something different.
I am not from the land I live in, and this fact brings to me very melancholic and sad moments, simply there is Enya to make me experience expert. The song "On My Way Habitation" makes me remember of all the good days I've lived in my origin place. The song "The Retentiveness of Trees" makes me think of the surround and the Mother Nature, and how we are destroying information technology.
I would add these song to a list similar yours :)
Thank you if yous read this! Regards from Spain! :)
